“Did you ever notice that when you put the words “THE and IRS” together, it spells “THEIRS?”

These images float in the center of a man’s handkerchief sporting a very large white border, which is to be used, I imagine, for catching massive amounts of tears, or mopping up flop sweat during an audit.

When asked if he has anything to declare, the oh-so-silly suitor in the right hand corner blathers on in an effort to impress the tax collector.  Hoping to be considered a suitable match for the auditor’s daughter, the clueless swain wildly exaggerates his lifestyle. Indeed, his rowboat is now a yacht, while his hitchhiking has morphed into world class voyaging. The big hearted lad even supports dependents, if you consider champagne and dinner support, and donates to charity as well. (oeuvres bénévoles are charitable organizations)  His animal shelter of choice happens to house thoroughbreds.   Hmmmm.  Methinks this lad is speeding down the highway toward Auditville, rather than the Road to Romance….

This is yet another delightful creation from artist Jacques Charmoz and we had to give a squeeze of the buffalo* during this hand-wringing, hair pulling tax season.  Woe betide our young suitor who has no idea what hot water he’s boiling as he prepares to take a whopping financial bath!

“Income tax returns are the most imaginative fiction being written today.”

Herman Wouk

*For our foreign readers, in the US, we have a saying describing parsimony at its finest, which refers to squeezing a nickel until the buffalo image on the coin emits a squeal.
